Fostering Sustainability through Psychological Safety: A Thematic Review
Keywords:

Psychological safety, defined as a shared belief that employees can take interpersonal risks without fear of negative consequences, has emerged as a critical factor in promoting organizational sustainability. Organizations striving for long-term sustainable outcomes require work environments where employees feel empowered to voice ideas, engage in innovative practices, and participate in sustainability initiatives. This study presents a thematic literature review exploring the relationship between psychological safety and organizational sustainability. Relevant peer-reviewed studies were identified through systematic searches in databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, using keywords including psychological safety, organizational sustainability, and sustainable practices. Selected studies were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and conceptual relationships. The analysis revealed four dominant themes: fostering employee participation and engagement, promoting innovation and learning, enhancing ethical and responsible organizational practices, and strengthening organizational culture and resilience. Findings indicate that psychologically safe workplaces enable employees to actively contribute to sustainable practices, support ethical decision-making, and enhance organizational adaptability. This review underscores the strategic importance of psychological safety as a human and cultural enabler of long-term organizational sustainability and provides directions for future research on integrating psychological safety into sustainability frameworks.
