The Role of Employee Resilience in Achieving Organizational Sustainability: A Thematic Analysis

Abstract

Employee resilience—the capacity to adapt to change, recover from setbacks, and maintain high performance under pressure—has emerged as a critical factor in supporting organizational sustainability. Organizations seeking long-term sustainable outcomes require employees who can navigate uncertainties, engage consistently in sustainability initiatives, and contribute to innovative and responsible practices. This study presents a thematic literature review examining the relationship between employee resilience and organizational sustainability. Relevant literature was identified through systematic searches in academic databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, using keywords such as employee resilience, organizational sustainability, adaptability, and sustainable organizational practices. Selected studies were analyzed using thematic analysis, resulting in five dominant themes: adaptation to change, sustained employee engagement, innovation and problem-solving, supporting ethical and responsible practices, and strengthening organizational culture and long-term performance. The findings indicate that resilient employees serve as a key enabler of sustainability by fostering adaptability, engagement, innovation, and ethical conduct within organizations. This review underscores the strategic importance of cultivating employee resilience to enhance organizational sustainability and provides directions for future research on human and organizational factors in sustainable development.
