Abstract

This study examines the role of social media in shaping the political opinions of citizens during electoral periods. The rapid proliferation of social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok has fundamentally transformed the political communication landscape, creating new channels through which voters encounter political information, engage in political discourse, and form or revise their electoral preferences. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a quantitative cross-sectional survey with semi-structured interviews, to investigate the extent to which social media exposure influences political opinion formation, the specific mechanisms through which this influence operates, and the moderating role of media literacy in buffering against misinformation. A structured questionnaire incorporating scales measuring social media political engagement, perceived influence on political opinions, political knowledge, susceptibility to misinformation, and media literacy was administered to 100 registered voters selected through stratified random sampling during the most recent national election cycle. Supplementary in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 participants. The quantitative findings reveal that 74% of respondents identified social media as their primary source of election-related information, surpassing television (58%), newspapers (21%), and radio (17%). Multiple regression analysis indicates that the frequency of social media political engagement, exposure to political advertising, and participation in online political discussions collectively explain 38% of the variance in self-reported political opinion change scores. However, higher media literacy was significantly associated with lower susceptibility to misinformation (r = -0.52, p < 0.01) and moderated the relationship between social media exposure and opinion change. The study concludes that social media has become a dominant force in shaping political opinions during elections, functioning as both an enabler of democratic participation and a vector for misinformation and political polarization, and recommends comprehensive media literacy education, platform accountability reforms, and regulatory transparency measures to safeguard the integrity of democratic electoral processes.
