The Impact of Social Media Use on Academic Performance

Abstract

This study examines the impact of social media use on the academic performance of university students. With the rapid proliferation of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (now X), TikTok, and Snapchat, concerns have intensified regarding their influence on students' concentration, study habits, and overall academic achievement. The research employs a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design to investigate the relationship between the frequency and duration of social media engagement and students' cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs). A structured questionnaire was administered to 300 undergraduate students selected through stratified random sampling from three faculties at a public university. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings reveal a statistically significant negative correlation (r = -0.47, p < 0.01) between the number of hours spent on social media daily and students' CGPA scores. Regression analysis further indicates that social media usage, multitasking behavior, and late-night screen time collectively explain approximately 34% of the variance in academic performance. The study concludes that while social media offers educational opportunities when used purposefully, excessive and unregulated use poses a substantial threat to academic success. Recommendations are offered for students, educators, and university administrators to promote balanced digital engagement strategies.
