Linguistic Convergence in Cross-Border Merger Integration Communication

This study examines linguistic convergence in cross-border merger integration communication through a quantitative investigation of 100 employees in recently merged cross-border organizations (mergers within past 24 months). Grounded in Communication Accommodation Theory (Giles & Ogay, 2007) + Post-Merger Integration Theory, the research investigates the linguistic mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Linguistic convergence (both sides adapting toward shared communication norms) occurred in only 34% of mergers; dominant-language imposition occurred in 52%. Convergent mergers showed 38% higher employee satisfaction and 42% lower integration conflict. Time to shared linguistic norms averaged 18 months. Convergence was faster when: new shared terminology was created (34% faster), leadership modeled bilingual behavior (28% faster), and language training was provided (24% faster). Regression: convergence strategy (Beta=0.38), power symmetry (Beta=0.26), language training investment (Beta=0.24) explained 44% of variance in integration satisfaction. The findings provide theoretical contributions and practical implications for business communication, organizational policy, and professional practice.
