Emoji Use in Professional Communication: Evolving Norms and Generational Divides

This study examines emoji use in professional communication: evolving norms and generational divides through a quantitative investigation of 100 professionals across three generations (Gen Z n=34, Millennials n=33, Gen X/Boomers n=33) surveyed on emoji attitudes and analyzed for emoji usage in 500 work emails. Grounded in Computer-Mediated Communication Theory + Generational Cohort Theory (Mannheim, 1952), the research investigates the linguistic mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Gen Z used emojis in 72% of professional emails vs. Millennials 48% vs. Gen X/Boomers 14%. Emoji use increased perceived friendliness (r=0.52) but decreased perceived professionalism among older recipients (r=-0.44). Thumbs-up emoji was interpreted as sincere by 82% of Gen Z but as passive-aggressive by 36% of Millennials. Smiley-face emoji in manager-to-subordinate emails increased approachability ratings by 28% but decreased authority perception by 18%. Regression: generational cohort (Beta=0.38), organizational formality culture (Beta=-0.28), hierarchical direction (Beta=0.22) explained 44% of variance in emoji acceptability ratings. The findings provide theoretical contributions and practical implications for business communication, organizational policy, and professional practice.
